Why is Nitrogen Gas used in Transformers?

Nitrogen gas acts as a protective blanket above the transformer oil, preventing moisture and humid air from entering the tank.

Being dry and chemically inert, it minimizes oxidation by reducing the oil’s contact with oxygen, which helps extend the life of both the insulating oil and the transformer insulation.

Since nitrogen is non-flammable and does not support combustion, it also enhances transformer safety by reducing the risk of fire.
