Why is a disconnector necessary in a fixed-type vacuum circuit breaker installation?

For purposes of maintenance and safety, a disconnector is an essential component in a fixed-type vacuum circuit breaker arrangement.

It serves the purpose of providing a visible isolation point.

However, regardless of the fact that it can interrupt

• Fault currents and

• Load currents,

the vacuum circuit breaker does not provide any physical separation of circuit.

It is possible for professionals to safely perform maintenance (or) inspections without the risk of accidentally energizing the breaker since the disconnector ensures that the breaker is entirely and clearly isolated from the power source.
