In this type of vibration, the frequency of the vibration is depended on the frequency of the force of the applied motion.

Vibration isolation can be used to suppress unwanted vibrations through the use of vibration isolators. Isolation devices are widely used in many applications such as aerospace, automobile, construction and in every application that involves the relative motion of the parts. The major means of reducing unwanted vibrations are vibration isolation and vibration absorption. Vibration absorbers are used in systems that runs at a constant speed such as electric razors, sanders, compactors, and reciprocating tools.

What is vibration damping

Vibration damping can be considered as the dissipation of energy in an oscillating system. Damped vibration is the depletion of energy. When a vibrating system is damped there will be energy loss. Vibrations could occur in overhead transmission lines, because of the wind there will be vibrations and oscillations and this could lead to the damage of the conductor on the overhead transmission lines. These vibrations can be reduced by installing the damping system in the overhead transmission lines.


What are the causes of vibration

Vibration can be caused in a system because of the unbalanced centrifugal forces, Elastic nature of the system. It could also happen because of the external excitation applied to the system. Winds can also cause vibration in electricity and telephone lines.


How vibration damping is different from vibration isolation

Vibration damping will reduce the energy of a system, the vibration damper will take out the energy of the system. If we increase the damping in a system there will be a reduction in vibration and noise. Vibration isolation is used to prevent the vibration from one part of the structure to others. A proper isolation system will reduce the natural frequency of a mechanical system below the excitation frequency and this will keep the natural and excitation frequency out of sync, so the vibration can be reduced.

What is the best vibration absorbing material

Viscoelastic materials are the best vibration absorbing material, they are used for vibration damping. This material exhibits the properties of viscous solutions, liquids, and solids. These materials are useful in shocks and vibration applications. Sorbothane is a viscoelastic material that can be used to reduce noise transmission, vibration transfer, and vibration related stresses.

What are the types of vibration isolation

There are mainly two types of vibration isolation methods passive and active vibration isolation.

Passive vibration isolation

The passive vibration isolation is the isolation by passive techniques such as by rubber pads or mechanical spring. A passive vibration isolation system consists of a mass-spring or a damper. This is the most basic and intuitive method of vibration isolation. The common type of passive isolator is a pneumatic or air isolators. The passive isolation system generally contains mass, spring and damping elements, and moves as a harmonic oscillator. The mass and spring stiffness dictate the neutral frequency of the system. Damping will cause energy dissipation and has a secondary effect on natural frequency.

Active vibration isolation

The components of active vibration isolation systems are a piezoelectric accelerometer, a controller, an electromagnetic transducer, and a feedback circuit. The acceleration signal is processed by a control circuit and amplifier. Then it would reach the electromagnetic actuator and this will help in signal amplification. So because of this kind of feedback system, stronger suppression of vibration is achieved while compared to normal damping.
