Optical Network Terminal
ONT Panel - Optical Network Terminal
Alternatively, in some initiatives, it is named ONU which stands for Optical Network Unit.
This panel has become an integral feature of every modern residential build that uses a fiber optic network.
The ONT (or) ONU is installed within each apartment and stays the connection point between the outside network & the services inside the apartment.
Its role is to take the fiber cable coming from the main communication room & distribute it to other outputs.
The first component is a high-speed internet data port that connects to the router.
The second component is a phone voice port that connects to the PBX, the project’s internal central hub for connecting landlines to the external network.
The third thing is a TV port output, which can work in two ways:
- IPTV (Internet Protocol Television) which is a TV that works via the Internet (or)
- SMATV (Satellite Master Antenna Television) which gathers the signal of the channels from a single central dish and distributes it to all apartments via cables.
The primary advantage of having an ONT is that it consolidates all of these services onto a single panel within the apartment rather than having numerous connections and devices.
This simplifies maintenance and improves service quality, as well as allowing the system to readily expand and develop in the future.
