What is the maximum kilowatt (kW) capacity of a 1000 kVA transformer?
A 1000 kVA power transformer is capable of handling 1000 kVA of apparent power. To convert this to kilowatts (kW), you must account for the power factor (PF) of the load, as perceived power (kVA) & real power (kW) are related by the power factor.
kW = kVA × Power Factor
If we use a typical power factor of 0.8 (which is usual for industrial loads), the true power in kW will be:
kW = 1000 kVA × 0.8 = 800 kW
A 1000 kVA transformer may thus deliver roughly 800 kW of real power with a power factor of 0.8. If the power factor varies, you must adjust accordingly.
