What is the IEC standard for Fieldbus?
The IEC standard for Fieldbus is mostly based on two main series:
IEC 61158 - Fieldbus Specifications
This is the main standard for networks that connect businesses. It sets out:
- Physical layer: The physical layer is the part of the network that deals with electrical and mechanical properties…
- Data link layer: Rules for sending data safely.
- Application layer: Services for industrial devices to talk to each other.
There are many varieties of protocols in IEC 61158, from Type 1 to Type 27. Each type represents a particular Fieldbus technology, like PROFIBUS, FOUNDATION Fieldbus, Modbus, and EtherCAT.
IEC 61784 - Communication Profiles
This series goes along with IEC 61158 by:
- Setting up communication profiles for certain industrial uses.
- Putting different types of protocols into Communication Profile Families (CPFs).
- Making sure that all vendors can work together and follow the same rules.
For example:
- CPF 3 includes PROFIBUS and PROFINET.
- FOUNDATION Fieldbus is part of CPF 2.
- EtherCAT is connected to CPF 12.
IEC 61158 and IEC 61784 work together to give industrial automation a complete set of rules for designing, building, and testing Fieldbus systems. They make guarantee that components like controllers, transmitters, and actuators can talk to each other safely and reliably over complicated distributed control systems (DCS).
These standards are necessary for deterministic communication, making wiring less complicated, and enabling real-time control in factory and process automation.
