Programmable Logic Controller (PLC)

A Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) is an industrialized digital computer that manages automation activities like managing machinery on factory assembly lines, amusement attractions, or lighting fixtures.

PLCs are used to automate processes by accepting inputs (from sensors, switches, etc.), interpreting these inputs using pre-programmed logic (stored in the PLC’s memory), and then delivering outputs.

Programming languages for PLCs include Ladder Logic, Function Block Diagram (FBD), and Structured Text.

Working of PLC

Input: The PLC receives input from linked devices like sensors.

Processing: These inputs are processed according to preset logic.

Output: It generates the necessary output signals for controlling other devices such as motors, valves, & alarms.

  • Continuously checks the input signals.
  • Executes logic depending on a predefined sequence.
  • Controls the output devices accordingly.

EX: A PLC might be used to regulate a conveyor belt system by monitoring the position of goods on the belt and operating actuators to sort them accordingly.

Application of PLC

PLCs are largely employed in industrial automation, where dependability, simplicity of programming, & real-time control are essential.

Power Line Carrier Communication (PLCC)

Power Line Carrier Communication (PLCC) is a technique that transmits data and communication signals across electrical power lines. It allows data to be transferred over existing electrical infrastructure without the need for additional wire.

PLCCs are used for communication, especially in the power industry. It allows data transfer (such as telemetry, telecontrol, & teleprotection) over the high-voltage power lines.

PLCC systems modulate data onto a carrier frequency & superimpose it on the power line, allowing power and data to be transmitted over the same physical media.

Working of PLCC

Signal Modulation: Signal modulation is the process of modulating a carrier signal with data that will be sent.

Transmission: The modulated signal is positioned on the power line.

Reception: At the receiver end, the signal is demodulated to obtain the data.

  • Modulates data on a carrier signal.
  • Sends the signal via power lines.
  • Demodulates the signal at receiving end in order to extract the data.

EX: In a power distribution network, PLCC might be utilised for transmitting control signals to substations using the same power lines that carry energy.

Application of PLCC

PLCC is commonly utilised in the power industry to communicate between substations and control centres, as well as to remotely control circuit breakers & other devices.
