What is Malware?
Malware (short for malicious software) refers to any software designed to intentionally harm, exploit, or otherwise compromise the data, devices, or networks of its target. Malware can take various forms, such as:
- Viruses – Programs that attach themselves to legitimate software and spread from one file or system to another.
- Worms – Malware that replicates itself and spreads across networks without needing to attach to a program.
- Trojan Horses – Malware disguised as legitimate software but with a hidden malicious function.
- Ransomware – Malware that encrypts a victim’s data and demands a ransom for its release.
- Spyware – Software that secretly monitors user activity and sends the information to a third party.
- Adware – Unwanted software that displays ads on a user’s device, often without their consent.
- Keyloggers – Programs that record keystrokes to capture sensitive information like passwords.
Malware can lead to data theft, financial loss, system damage, and unauthorized access to networks. It is spread through email attachments, malicious websites, or compromised software. Regular updates, antivirus software, and cautious online behavior can help prevent malware infections.
