The term “load flow” and “power flow” may be used interchangeably in this standard.
This is a term given to a network solution that anticipates steady-state currents, voltages, as well as real & reactive power flows via all system branches and buses.
Load-flow research studies simulate operating conditions that cannot be experienced on the actual system because it has not yet been built, there are practical time constraints, or it could be unwise to subject the actual physical system to potentially damaging conditions.
Load-flow studies are not usually aimed at determining specific performance metrics. Often, the goal is to obtain insight into how the system operates across a variety of operational conditions.
Power flows are an essential component of power system operation & planning.
