What is GOOSE Messaging?
GOOSE enables high-speed, peer-to-peer communication between Intelligent Electronic Devices (IEDs) such as protection relays over Ethernet networks.
Unlike traditional systems it eliminates the need for extensive physical wiring and allows important signals like:
Trip commands
Breaker failure signals
Interlocking logic
Close commands
to be transmitted almost instantaneously.
GOOSE vs Conventional (Hardwired) Systems
GOOSE Messaging (IEC 61850 Based)
- Digital peer-to-peer communication over Ethernet
- Ultra-fast response (< 4 ms) — ideal for protection schemes
- Highly flexible — changes can be made via software
- Reduced wiring — cleaner panels and easier installation
- Real-time monitoring and diagnostics (e.g., PCM600)
- Scalable for modern and automated substations
Conventional Hardwired Systems
- Requires physical copper wiring between devices
- Slower response (10 - 50 ms) due to mechanical delays
- Limited flexibility - requires rewiring for changes
- Bulky wiring - complex panel layouts
- Minimal diagnostics and monitoring capability
Common in Substations
GOOSE Messaging = Sending a WhatsApp message instantly to multiple people
Hardwiring = Walking to each person and handing over a note
Why GOOSE important in Solar Plants?
In solar substations where speed and coordination are essential GOOSE plays a vital function in:
Breaker Failure Protection (BFP)
Transformer protection and tripping
Interlocking schemes
Even a few milliseconds of delay can impact equipment safety and grid stability.
GOOSE Status in ABB Relays (PCM600)
Navigate to IED Communication
Verify GOOSE Control Blocks & Subscriptions
Use GOOSE Monitoring tools
Confirm active communication (Green Status )
Supported relays include: REC670, RED670, RET650, REF615, REL650
Common Signs of GOOSE Communication Issues
“Timeout” or “Invalid” status in subscribed signals
Signal values not updating during switching events
Alarms appearing on relay HMI
GOOSE messaging represents the shift toward smarter, faster and more reliable substations.
GOOSE = Digital, fast, and flexible
Hardwired = Traditional, slower, and maintenance-intensive
Understanding and implementing GOOSE is essential for anyone working with modern substations especially in rapidly growing renewable energy sectors like solar.
