What is Clamp meter? Operation, advantages

Clamp meter:

Clamp meters are electrical testers with wide jaws that can clamp around an electrical conductor. The clamp meter is often known as Tong Tester too. Originally designed as a single-purpose tool to measure AC current, clamp meters now include inputs to accept test leads and other probes that support a wide range of electrical measurements.

The clamp meter is used to find out the device is normal or abnormal, it can be known, one of them is by looking at or measuring the amount of electric current flowing in the load or electrical equipment.

Why to use Clamp meter?

If the current flowing on a network will be measured while not allowing cutting the network to connect the ampere measuring device or through a current transformer, if the network is cut off then the power supply will be stopped, the use of a network ampere measuring instrument is a very good problem-solving.

The clamp meter will not disturb the current carrying conductor, the clamp just wraps the conductor wire.

To find out the device is normal or abnormal, it can be known, one of them is by looking at or measuring the amount of electric current flowing in the load or electrical equipment, then the value of the electric current that we get is compared with the rated or working capacity printed on electrical equipment the result is that if the measurement data is greater than the rated, then there is an abnormality in the electrical appliances.

How to operate Clamp meter?

The AC clamp meters operate according to the principle of the current transformer (CT) used to capture the magnetic flux generated as a result of the current flowing through a conductor. Assuming that a current flowing through a conductor is the primary current, it can obtain a current proportional to the primary current by electromagnetic induction from the secondary (winding) side of the transformer that is connected to a measuring circuit of the instrument. This allows you to take an AC current reading on the digital display (in the case of digital clamp meters) as illustrated in the block diagram.

After the current flows in a coil with a certain voltage, it will be directly processed by the components making up Clamp Meter (Tang Ampere) Analog and sent to Display.

The working principle of this display is to use the working principle of a rotary coil measuring instrument. Rotary coil measuring instrument is a measuring instrument that works on the principle of the existence of an electric coil, which is placed on a magnetic field, which comes from a permanent magnet. The current flowing through the coil will cause the coil to spin.

When the coil rotates, the pointer rotates according to the amount of electric current entering the coil on the rotary coil measuring instrument.

Advantages of Clamp meter:

  • It can be used in noisy electrical environments.

  • It has an ergonomic design that fits in your hand while wearing protective equipment.

  • It can be used for measurements in narrow places with a clear presentation

  • Fast measurement saves money and time

  • Used for wide range measurement.
