What is Buchholz Relay?

A Buchholz relay is an essential protective device used in oil-filled transformers with a conservator tank, designed to detect internal faults and abnormal conditions early by sensing gas generation or sudden oil movement.

Working Principle

When a fault like insulation breakdown or core heating occurs inside the transformer, it generates excessive heat.

This heat decomposes insulating oil, producing gases whose volume depends on fault severity.

Gas rises toward the conservator, accumulating in the Buchholz relay installed in the pipe between the tank and the conservator.

The pressure from gas or sudden oil movement actuates mechanical switches inside the relay:

Minor faults generate slow gas accumulation, activating the alarm contacts.Major faults (like short circuits) create rapid oil flow, quickly moving floats/baffles and triggering trip contacts to disconnect the transformer.

Construction

The Buchholz relay typically contains two main elements:

Upper float: Detects gradual increase in gas; triggers alarm contacts.

Lower float or baffle: Detects rapid oil movement due to severe faults; triggers trip contacts.

Gas pockets and mechanical or mercury switches are used for contact actuation.

Electrical leads from the relay connect to the transformer protection system to issue alarm or shutdown signals

Maintenance

The relay requires regular inspection and periodic tests (usually annually during scheduled maintenance)

Functional tests involve operating the test cock, verifying proper actuation of alarm and trip contacts, and bleeding accumulated gas.

Correct orientation is essential; the arrow on the casing should point toward the conservator tank to avoid misoperation.

Precautions

External vibrations, incorrect mounting, or accidental reversal during maintenance can falsely trigger the relay
