What is a Partial Stroke Test (PST)?
It is possible to evaluate the operation of an Emergency Shutdown Valve (ESDV) by the use of a method known as a Partial Stroke Test (PST), which does not involve completely closing the valve.
It is important to do this test to confirm that the valve is operative & will function appropriately in case of an emergency, all while minimizing disturbances to the process.
Why is PST Important in ESDV?
The process of ensuring valve readiness involves verifying that the valve is not currently stuck or jammed.
It is able to detect probable faults before an emergency occurs, which helps to prevent unplanned shutdowns.
When the frequency of full stroke testing is reduced, the requirement for a complete shutdown test is minimized.
The fact that it complies with IEC 61508 and IEC 61511 for Safety Instrumented Systems (SIS) indicates that it is in accordance with safety standards. Valve life is extended by preventing the accumulation of impurities and ensuring that components continue to work properly.
