What is a Historian in SCADA?
A SCADA historian is a specialized software program made to gather, store, and handle historical process data from many SCADA system sources. It allows users to access and examine past data by logging events, operating parameters, alerts, and real-time data over time into a database. Because this data is frequently kept in a time-series format, users may keep an eye on performance, identify trends, and make data-driven decisions for reporting, troubleshooting, and process optimization.
To provide effective data storage and retrieval, the historian automatically adjusts the database setup to accommodate the quantity of tags (data points) being logged. For sectors that need long-term data retention for performance analysis, compliance, or predictive maintenance, this is essential. A historian in SCADA contributes to the preservation of a historical record of operations by storing vast amounts of data, providing insights into the performance and behavior of the system over lengthy periods of time.
