What is 59N Protection?

The 59N protection relay also called as Neutral Overvoltage (59N) Protection measures the voltage between system neutral & ground.

It is intended to detect neutral displacement induced by an earth fault in an ungrounded (or) resistance-grounded system.

How Neutral Overvoltage (59N) Protection works?

Under typical conditions, the neutral-to-earth voltage is near to 0.

When an earth fault develops on one phase, the system’s neutral moves, resulting in a detectable voltage between neutral & ground.

If this voltage exceeds a certain level the 59N relay activates often sounding an alarm (or) tripping the affected feeder in order to isolate the fault.

59N is commonly used in MV networks when the system neutral is isolated (or) resistance grounded to ensure early fault identification and stability.
