What happens when the pressure inside a power transformer suddenly rises?
A transformer PRV is a vital safety device designed to protect an oil-filled transformer from excessive internal pressure.
How does it work?
During a serious internal fault, such as a short circuit or arcing, the transformer oil can heat up rapidly. This can generate gases and cause a sudden increase in internal pressure.
When the pressure exceeds the PRV’s preset operating limit, the valve automatically opens and releases the excess pressure.
Once the pressure returns to a safe level, the valve closes again.
Why is PRV important?
- Protects the transformer tank from excessive pressure.
- Reduces the risk of tank rupture and major damage.
- Provides rapid pressure relief during internal faults.
- Enhances overall transformer safety and reliability.
