What are the steps involved in planning a wirelessHART network?
WirelessHART network planning begins with clear process requirements and a practical site survey. Before selecting equipment, the reliability of a mesh depends on placement, radio pathways, gateway capacity and update rates.
1. Define the application
List each measurement site, criticality, needed update rate, acceptable delay and integration needs. Wireless monitoring is ideal for remote pressure, temperature, tank level, corrosion and equipment condition. Ensure that the program can deal with the network response time.
2. Survey the plant
Recognize instruments, steel structures, vessels, pipe racks, buildings and impediments on a site layout. Identify neighboring 2.4 GHz sources by survey. Line of sight does not guaranty a reliable link.
3. Plan gateways and mesh paths
Deploy gateways for dependable field coverage and communication to the host system. Do not have nodes isolated at coverage edges. Ensure devices have nodes nearby that give other pathways. Use planning tools and metrics to identify weak links.
4. Check capacity and power
Gateway capacity, unique network IDs, security settings, antenna requirements. Update rates, estimated battery life. Faster reporting often means higher power consumption. Check integration with DCS, SCADA or asset management system including data mapping.
5. Commission and monitor
Join devices and assess neighbor count, path stability, packet delivery, latency and battery health. Test functioning conditions and record acceptance criteria prior to handover.
Field tip: Before you replace a remote transmitter that keeps dropping out, check path variety and adjacent barriers. Review diagnostics following changes in plant architecture or equipment as metal structures and machinery might affect radio propagation.
