1. Visual Inspection

Conduct a thorough visual assessment during each maintenance cycle:

  • Inspect the drive enclosure for dust, dirt, grease, or moisture accumulation.
  • Check for loose wires, frayed cables, and broken insulation.
  • Check for burn marks, discolouration, and corrosion on terminals and circuit boards.
  • Check for foreign objects and insects inside the panel.

Duration: Monthly or quarterly (depending on the climate).

2. Cleaning

Keeping the VFD clean is crucial for efficient cooling and performance.

  • Turn off the VFD prior to cleaning.
  • Use low-pressure compressed air to remove dust and debris from vents, cooling fins, & components.
  • Clean or replace clogged air filters.
  • Clean the outside using a dry (or) slightly damp cloth (never apply solvent-based cleaners).

Duration: Every 3-6 months or based on dust exposure level.

3. Electrical Checks

Ensure that all electrical connections & components are secure and working correctly.

  • Tighten all control and power terminals with a torque wrench to prevent loose connections.
  • Record input and output voltage levels, and check for phase imbalances.
  • Inspect grounding system for continuity and correct bonding to earth.
  • Test insulation resistance (with a megger) on motors and wires.

Duration: Biannual or during shutdowns.

4. Cooling System Inspection

Proper cooling is essential for VFD longevity and efficiency.

  • Ensure cooling fans are spinning freely & not hindered.
  • Check for odd noises that indicate fan motor failure (or) bearing wear.
  • Replace any worn or broken fans.
  • Keep heat sinks clean and unobstructed.
  • Monitor the temperature around the VFD.

5. Software, Settings, & Parameters

Digital backups & software updates are equally important:

  • Make regular backups of all VFD parameters & settings.
  • Check setpoints & control logic for unintentional changes.
  • Update firmware to the most recent manufacturer-recommended version (if applicable).
  • Monitor fault histories for trends of recurring issues.

6. Environmental Monitoring

Environmental variables have a direct impact on VFD performance.

  • Maintain ambient temperature within manufacturer limitations (usually 0°C to 50°C).
  • Keep relative humidity below 95% and avoid condensing.
  • Avoid placing VFDs near high vibration sources (such as compressors or powerful motors).
  • Protect the panel area from corrosive gasses, metal dust, & direct sunlight.

  • Periodic testing assures the VFD’s health and motor performance.
  • Test motor insulation resistance with power off and leads removed.
  • Check braking units, DC bus voltage & control I/Os for proper operation.
  • Test the motor’s performance in no-load and full-load circumstances.
  • Monitor harmonic levels in the system.
