Tan Delta Testing

Tan Delta Testing

Tan Delta Testing: Early Warning System

  • Before breakdown.
  • Before outages.
  • Before costly failures.

Tan Delta reveals the truth about insulation health.

What Tan Delta Really Measures?

It tracks dielectric losses inside insulation caused by:

• Moisture ingress

• Oil contamination

• Paper insulation aging

• Partial discharge activity

Think of insulation like a capacitor.

• Healthy → Mostly capacitive, very low loss

• Aging → Leakage current increases

Tan δ = Resistive (leakage) current / Capacitive current

Lower value means stronger insulation.

4-Step Testing Workflow

Isolate the transformer and ensure proper grounding

Connect the test kit across bushings

Apply controlled test voltage (typically 2–10 kV)

Measure tan delta and capacitance at different voltages

How to Interpret the Results?

• < 0.5% → Healthy, continue monitoring

• 0.5% – 1% → Degrading, increase testing frequency

• > 1% → Critical, immediate action required

Always compare with past results.

Because insulation failure is not a moment.

It is a trend.

What Tan Delta Helps You Detect?

• Hidden moisture

• Oil degradation

• Early insulation aging

• Partial discharge risk

• Weak internal zones

Transformers rarely fail without warning.

But most warnings are invisible

unless you measure them.

A simple test can deliver:

• Early fault detection

• Reduced outage risk

• Extended transformer life

• Lower maintenance cost
