NEMA Standard
A NEMA standard is a set of guidelines established by the National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA) for the design, performance, safety and specifications of electrical equipment & components, such as NEMA enclosures (or) motor frame sizes.
These standards increase safety, product compatibility, and communication between companies & users by establishing a standardized set of requirements for the North American electrical industry.
The NEMA standard has created standard motor designs such as NEMA Design A, B, C & D - which define motor torque characteristics based on intended applications and performance criteria.
Each NEMA design designation features a unique speed-torque curve that depicts the relationship between motor speed & torque utilization under different load circumstances.
