Megger / Insulation Resistance (IR) Test QA/QC Checklist

A Megger or Insulation Resistance (IR) Test is a critical QA/QC inspection used to verify the insulation integrity of cables, motors, transformers, switchgear, and electrical panels before commissioning. It helps identify moisture, contamination, insulation deterioration, and potential faults that could lead to equipment failure.

Before the Test

Ensure the equipment is completely isolated and de-energized using proper LOTO procedures.

Verify there is no stored electrical charge and discharge capacitive circuits.

Disconnect sensitive electronic devices if required.

Select the correct Megger test voltage (250V, 500V, 1kV, 2.5kV, or 5kV) according to equipment ratings.

Record ambient temperature and humidity.

During the Test

Inspect the Megger leads for damage and proper connections.

Connect the test leads to the appropriate terminals.

Apply the test voltage for the specified duration, typically 1 minute.

Record insulation resistance values in megaohms (MΩ) or gigaohms (GΩ).

Compare phase-to-phase and phase-to-earth readings for consistency.

After the Test

Safely discharge the equipment before disconnecting the test leads.

Restore all removed connections and protective covers.

Compare measured values with manufacturer recommendations or applicable IEC/IEEE standards.

Document test voltage, duration, readings, temperature, humidity, equipment identification, and tester details.

Mark the equipment as Pass or Fail, and investigate any abnormal or low insulation resistance values before energization.
