Motor kW
The expression “motor KW” refers to an electric motor’s power rating, which is measured in kilowatts (kW).
This rating represents the amount of electrical power that the motor can convert to mechanical power.
The kW rating is essential in evaluating the motor’s ability to accomplish work, such as powering a
- Pump,
- Fan,
- Conveyor, or
- Other machinery.
Key Features of Motor kW
Power Rating
The motor’s kW rating represents its output power.
Ex: 10 kW motor can provide 10 kilowatts of mechanical power.
Efficiency
Because motors are not completely efficient, the input electrical power exceeds the output mechanical power.
Efficiency is often measured as a percentage.
Application
The needed kW rating varies according to the load & application. Overloading a motor may cause damage, whereas under-loading might result in inefficiency.
Conversion
1 kW = 1.34 horsepower (HP).
Ex: 5 kW motor produces around 6.7 horsepower.
Voltage and Current
The motor’s kW rating is proportional to its voltage and current.
Formula: Power (kW) = (Voltage (V) X Current (A) X Power Factor) / 1000
