How Accurate Is a Micro Motion Flow Meter?
A Micro Motion flow meter is a form of Coriolis mass flow meter that is well-known in the process industry for being exceptionally accurate and repeatable. These meters measure mass flow directly, not by using volume, pressure, or temperature. This makes them very trustworthy when the process conditions change.
Micro Motion Coriolis flow meters usually come with:
- Mass flow accuracy: ±0.05% to ±0.10% of rate (for liquids)
- Repeatability: ±0.02% or better
- Density accuracy: ±0.0005 g/cm³
- Volumetric flow accuracy: Derived from mass and density, usually ±0.1%
For gas applications, the precision is a little lower because of how gases can be compressed, but it’s still quite good compared to other technologies, usually about ±0.35% to ±0.5% of the rate.
One major benefit is that fluid parameters like viscosity, conductivity, pressure, or flow profile don’t have a big effect on accuracy. This does away with the necessity for long straight pipe runs, which is not the case with DP or ultrasonic meters. Micro Motion meters are also very accurate even at low flow rates, which makes them great for batching, custody transfer, and critical dosing.
Modern Micro Motion meters have comprehensive diagnostics and verification functions that let you examine the health of the system without stopping the activity. This makes sure that the accuracy lasts for a long time by finding coating, erosion, sensor imbalance, or entrained gas problems early on.
Micro Motion flow meters are often used in oil and gas, chemicals, pharmaceuticals, food and drink, and custody transfer applications where measurement uncertainty needs to be kept to a minimum since they are accurate and stable.
