EMS- Energy Management System

What is EMS?

Energy management system consists of several application programs, which is a solution to control the energy consumption through continuous monitoring of energy flow. With the help of the EMS system, one can monitor the high energy consumption, so that we can make preventive actions.

All the programs are connected through a network in such a way that the output of a program is the input to another program. This continues until all the programs of a closed cycle. The output of each program provides a result that can be used by the operator to make decisions to control the power system.

EMS system function:

The function of an EMS system is to measure voltage and current, etc. through the current transformer (CT) and the power transformer (PT) or through remote terminal units (RTU) or phasor measurement units (PMU). These are inputs to the EMS of the control center.

The system based on the SCADA system is shown here, the State Estimation forms the first and most important function that is executed based on SCADA measurements. The result of the State Estimate is used by many other programs such as Online Load Flow, Contingency Analysis, Stability Analysis and Security Assessment, etc.

Advantages of EMS:

  • Cost effective solution

  • MIMIC representation with real time value

  • Easy to identify the inefficient electrical equipment

  • Maximum power demand analysis
