Difference between shunt coil and tripping coil
The following table provides an overview of the different characteristics that differentiate a shunt coil from a tripping coil:
Parameters | Shunt Coil | Tripping Coil |
---|---|---|
Function | Utilized to close the circuit breaker. | Utilized to open the circuit breaker. |
Operation | Creates a magnetic field to close breaker contacts. | Energizes to release a latch & open the breaker connections. |
Purpose | Facilitates remote (or) automated closing of the breaker. | Ensures that the breaker trips under fault conditions. |
Activation | Activated by a control signal (voltage) | Activated by a control signal when a defect is detected |
Common Use | In substations (or) industrial systems, breakers can be closed remotely (or) automatically. | Protection from overcurrent, short circuit, & other defects. |
