Difference between Buck-Boost Transformer and Isolation Transformer

Difference between Buck-Boost Transformer and Standard Isolation Transformer

Buck-Boost Transformer

A buck-boost transformer is a type of autotransformer that adjusts voltage by ±5% to ±20% of the supply voltage. It fails to provide electrical isolation across the input and output.

Standard Isolation Transformer

A conventional isolation transformer contains separate primary & secondary windings to provide galvanic isolation between the input and output. It is mostly used for safety, noise reduction & grounding control rather than for voltage rectification.

Difference between Buck-Boost Transformer and Isolation Transformer

Buck-Boost Transformer vs. Standard Isolation Transformer

Feature Buck-Boost Transformer Isolation Transformer
Voltage Change Range 5%-20% Any range
Transformer Size Small (voltage change only) Large (full load)
Cost Economical Expensive
Efficiency High (minimal losses) Good
Primary Use Voltage correction Complete isolation
