5 Golden Rules of Electrical Safety
Electrical work must always begin with proper isolation and verification. The 5 Golden Rules of Electrical Safety provide a structured approach to prevent electric shock, arc-flash incidents, unexpected energization, and other electrical hazards.
1. Disconnect Completely
Isolate the electrical equipment or circuit from all possible sources of energy. Ensure that the isolation is complete before starting any work.
2. Secure Against Reconnection – LOTO
Apply Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) procedures to prevent accidental or unauthorized re-energization. Each isolation point should be securely locked and clearly identified.
3. Verify the Absence of Voltage
Never assume that a circuit is dead. Use an approved and properly rated test instrument to verify the absence of voltage before touching or working on the equipment.
4. Earth and Short-Circuit Where Required
Where applicable, properly earth and short-circuit the isolated circuit to protect workers from induced voltages, stored electrical energy, or unexpected energization.
5. Protect Against Adjacent Live Parts
Identify nearby energized equipment and maintain safe clearance. Use appropriate barriers, insulation, PPE, and other protective measures to prevent accidental contact.
Following these five rules helps establish a safer working environment and ensures that electrical isolation is properly controlled before maintenance or testing begins.
