| Parameters | Speed Sensor | Proximity Sensor |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Purpose | Determines the speed of a rotating (or) moving object. | Determines whether an object is present or absent without making direct contact |
| Primary Output | Speed (usually measured in RPM or m/s) | Digital presence/absence or analog distance |
| Working Principle | Utilize electromagnetic, Hall effect (or) optical methods to sense motion. | makes use of optical, ultrasonic, capacitive, or inductive sensors |
| Typical Output Signal | Frequency or voltage in proportion to speed | Analog voltage or an on/off signal |
| Application | Monitoring motor speed, Vehicle speed sensors and Conveyor belt monitoring | Detecting objects, Counting objects, Position sensing and limit switching |
| Example | A crank-shaft speed sensor in an engine. | Metal components on a conveyor are detected by an inductive sensor. |
| Detects Static Objects? | No, only works with moving objects. | Yes, it can identify moving or stationary objects. |
| Contactless Operation | Yes | Yes |
| Sensitivity to Target | sensitive to the motion only | Insensitive to motion, but sensitive to proximity |
